Laurel received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2015. She lives in Knoxville, Tennessee in a little house by the woods, in the company of a German shepherd and lots of plants and critters. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Tennessee, Laurel spent the summers of her adolescence wandering southeast Appalachia, which has since remained a spiritual home and subject of fascination.
My drawings and paintings are about inner and outer spaces. I’m drawn to the theme of human resonance with Wilderness, and the savageries and subtleties of the natural world. I’ve had the impulse to make up stories since I was a child. I find narratives in the landscape around me, in music that moves me, in language, and in the suggestive power of visual totems. I’m compelled to pick details out of my memories, then reinforce and reanimate them by inventing new and sometimes urgent contexts for them.
